Hot off the Palette
"Daffodils in a Vase", Watercolour 20 x 14
After taking a workshop in 2007 with Anne Falconer Packham, a Regina artist who is an expert at realistic floral watercolours, I wanted to try my hand at realistic painting as well.
Working from a photograph that I took several years ago, I started by doing a comprehensive pencil drawing on a 300 lb. watercolour paper. Once my drawing was to my liking, I began to fill in the colors with light washes of watercolour paints.
I worked on the flowers, stems and leaves, often doing several washes, until I was happy with the contrast and depth of the painting. Once that was complete, I then started to fill in my background. Last but not least were the little bits of shadow on the vase.
I still thought the painting was missing something. With my watercolour pencils, I shaded in a few areas, and added some lines as veins on the leaves. That little bit was all that was needed for it to be complete in my eyes.
Even though the final painting is similar to the photograph, I have used artistic license to make it truly my own.
