Ward Schell Workshop
The Workshop
In the spring of 2006 a group of 14 artists from all over Saskatchewan and Manitoba gathered in northeast Saskatchewan at the Good Spirit Lake Golf and Family Resort for a weekend of creative activity. With Ward Schell, Saskatchewan Artist, acting as our facilitator, we worked on water media projects.
Colour Theory and Application
Our objective for the weekend was en plein painting, a French expression that means "in the open air". To capture the essence of a landscape en plein you need to work quickly as the light source is constantly changing. The challenge is to capture the essence of the mood of your painting in a short time.
The surrounding golf course was our inspiration. We sketched our subjects, first with pencil drawings, then with our colour media, working fast and spontaneous.

"This was the scene that I choose for my painting. The curves and flow of the course intrigued me. I started on a canvas board that was first primed with a very light wash of raw sienna and burnt umber. It's fun to leave some of the wash showing through your final painting giving it a warm sense of uniformity."
